TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 – FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2024
Write-up & Photos Submitted by Lynn and Carol Petre:
We had 17 coaches attend and a lot of participation from the group in the activities that were planned. It was a great rally.
Tuesday was another hot day in the 80’s. The campers started coming in around 3:00 and were all here about by 5:00. Lynn and I drove into town in the afternoon to do some shopping. Got back to the campground and we had our meet and greet from 3:30 – 5:00. Left for dinner with the group at 5:00 and went to the Broadway Grill downtown Coldwater. Had a nice time all together and everyone had plenty to eat. Came back to the campground and a few of us sat around for an hour or so. Watched the Harvest Moon come up and then headed off to bed. It was too warm out for a fire and the grass around the campground was really brown and dry, we were concerned with starting a grass fire.
Wednesday there was a coffee and doughnut gathering at 9:30 at the pavilion. Some of the campers stayed around and played cards and games, even a couple puzzels were made. At 1:00 six couples showed up for mini golf at Adventure Zone. At 3:00 we had three teams of six show up for Duck Golf at Adventure Zone. We all had a good time and a lot of laughs. Had a happy hour at the pavilion for about an hour. Everyone was on their own for dinner and then we met back at the pavilion for dessert at 8:00 and five of us had a campfire while everyone else played games under the pavilion. Beautiful fall evening.
Thursday was another hot day. We had the coffee and doughnut gathering at 9:30 at the pavilion. At 1:00 almost our whole group met at the Tibbits Opera House for a tour. It was a little over an hour tour and was quite interesting. A lot of history in that one building. We took a ride to the cemetery just outside of town and found the gravesite of Sam the horse who served in the civil war and was injured three times during his tour of duty. He came home from the war and they unloaded him from the railroad car and he walked to the farm and barn that he was raised at all on his own. He lived to be 25 years old. It was against the law to bury a horse in the cemetery back then but the town sheriff said he would be out of town for a couple of days and some of the town people started a small fire on the other side of town to keep the majority of the townspeople busy while some of the residents dug a whole and buried Sam the horse next to his fellow war heroes that he served in the war with. There’s a tomb stone that has his picture on it and a gold star next to it that indicates his service in the civil war. We learned about Sam from our tour guide at the Opray House.
We gathered back at the camp ground at the pavilion for happy hour and some people played cards. Had our pot luck and business meeting in the evening. Lee Brinks retired from his position of President. He has been our President since way before we joined the group. He was very well liked and did a tremendous job. John Daubenmier is now our President. We discussed next year’s rally schedule and it was voted in. We discussed our upcoming 25th anniversary and Tom and Michelle Maxwell are going to head up the committee and we said we would help them. After the rally some of us stayed and played cards for a while.
Friday morning everyone got up and said their goodbyes and headed in different directions. A lot of us will be going to the fall luncheon October 18 at 12:30 at the Medalist Golf Club & Banquet Facility in Marshall. It was a fun time and was nice that we had such a great turnout.
